GINGER TEA: A NUTRITION PROFESSIONAL'S PERSPECTIVE

Expert opinion from Toni Tran

Ginger tea is safe to drink. However, people should avoid consuming more than 4-5g of ginger a day. When overconsumed, ginger tea can have side effects such as abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea, and mouth and throat irritation. Some studies of the use of ginger during pregnancy suggest it is safe, but the evidence is not conclusive. Little is known about whether it’s safe to use ginger tea during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Taking a high dose of ginger tea might increase the risk of bleeding, lower blood sugar and worsen some heart conditions. Patients should talk to their doctors before taking ginger tea if they are on blood thinners, diabetic medications, or blood pressure medications.

Although ginger has several potential benefits, such as helping with nausea or digestion, there are also some potential negative side effects to be aware of. Some people report unwanted side effects with larger amounts of ginger or ginger tea, like stomachache, diarrhea, or indigestion. If you want to enjoy the health benefits of ginger and try to avoid potential unwanted side effects, it's recommended to enjoy it in moderation. If you are already experiencing negative side effects, you should reduce the amount of ginger you are consuming.

Ginger tea is relatively safe to drink at moderate amount. The only possible concern if drank excessively would be stomach upset or heartburn. With people who have blood clotting conditions, drinking too much ginger tea may cause higher chance of uncontrolled bleeding.
