Common pulse points are the radial artery at the wrist, carotid artery in the neck, brachial artery in the antecubital space, femoral artery in the groin, dorsalis pedis and posterior tibialis arteries in the feet. The apical pulse can be auscultated over the point of maximal impulse using a stethoscope. Assessing pulses at different locations allows comparison of rhythm, rate, and strength to identify abnormalities. #pulses #pulselocations #nursing #nurse #nclex #studentnurse #healthassessment

Racism in medicine | DW Documentary
More than a quarter of the population of Germany has a migrant background. Many report that they have received substandard care from doctors and hospitals. Is the healthcare system afflicted by racism? This documentary hears from people who’ve been turned away or received inadequate care in a medical emergency; from midwives who report on racism in the delivery room; from students who criticize teaching according to white norms; as well as from doctors who reflect on the problem. The film shows just how dangerous conscious or unconscious racism in the healthcare sector can be. Its findings are based on the results of the first representative study on the issue in Germany, published in November 2023 by the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research. The fact is: Even today, the term ‘Morbus Mediterraneus’ still circulates in the healthcare sector, which is intended to describe "exaggerated suffering in southerners". Standard medical equipment doesn’t always function reliably when used on dark-skinned patients. And many doctors have never learned that some diseases can be diagnosed differently depending on whether the person is Black or White. The medical norm, even in textbooks, is still the white, western European patient. This can result in misdiagnosis and the serious worsening of symptoms. Take the case of Remziye T. from Lower Saxony: Her infected heart valve went undiscovered for a long time because doctors didn’t take her pain seriously enough. When the problem was eventually correctly diagnosed, it was too late for medical treatment. Now Remziye T. has to live with a mechanical heart valve: the operation has left her unable to walk properly and she is no longer able to work. Dr. Bismarck Ofori allowed the camera team to film in his Hanover surgery. Many of the patients who attend the Black doctor’s practice have a migrant background. They tell him they’ve not been taken seriously in other surgeries; some of them were even brusquely turned away. In Ofori’s treatment room, it’s evident that careful diagnosis and overcoming language barriers in the process costs time and money. Not that language is the only obstacle to making a correct diagnosis. The pulse oximeter, for example, a device used to measure the blood’s oxygen content, can be less accurate when used on patients with darker skin. But this is not systematically taught at medical school. The healthcare system is only just beginning to unpack the issue of racism and its impact. But many doctors, medical students, midwives and a medical historian have spoken out - addressing a problem that, in the worst-case scenario, can have fatal consequences. #documentary #dwdocumentary ______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. 17 Foods with More Protein Than an Egg to Boost Your Meals
Bump up your daily protein intake with this mix of vegetarian and animal-based options. The post 17 Foods with More Protein Than an Egg to Boost Your Meals appeared first on Taste of Home. Have you noticed how obsessed with protein everyone seems to be these days? Food manufacturers are constantly bragging about the grams of protein on the front label, plenty of people at the gym seem to be discussing their post-workout protein shake routine, and anytime someone switches to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle everyone seems concerned about how on earth they’ll get enough protein. What’s with this fixation? “Protein helps to build and repair lean muscle mass,” says Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, FAND, nutrition expert and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the forthcoming Up Your Veggies: Flexitarian Recipes for the Entire Family. “From a digestion standpoint, protein helps you feel full faster and stay satiated and full for longer.” As such, it’s recommended to include protein at every meal. Amidor says the goal is to include 20-30 grams of high-quality protein—meaning it contains all the essential amino acids—at breakfast, lunch and dinner. That equates to eating 3-4 ounces of protein per meal, which fills roughly one-quarter of your plate. “Complete proteins come from animal-based foods like lean beef, pork or eggs,” says Amidor. “If you eat plant-based protein, make sure you are eating protein combinations or a variety of proteins throughout the day.” How Much Protein Is In an Egg? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), one large egg provides 71.5 calories and 6.3 grams of complete, high-quality protein. In fact, one egg has all nine of the essential amino acids your body needs daily: histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Eggs also contain magnesium, potassium, selenium, folate, choline, vitamin A, lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin D. Egg Yolks vs. Egg Whites Egg whites, also known as albumen, account for about 66% of the egg’s liquid weight and contain about half of the egg’s total protein. The rest is found in the yolk (the yellow portion). “Close to half of the protein is found in the yolk, and as such, I do recommend eating that golden yolk and minimizing food waste,” says Amidor. And even though it’s a source of dietary cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends one whole egg per day as part of a healthy diet. Foods with More Protein Than an Egg Eggs are an easy and complete source of protein, but considering they only have 6 grams of protein, they aren’t exactly the holy grail of protein sources. Check out these other protein-rich plant- and animal-based options that’ll boost your intake even more efficiently.

Medicine’s Response to the Changing Science on Fluoride Safety
Ironically, the anti-fluoridationists had historically been accused of their "anti-scientific attitudes," but now it’s many of the pro-fluoridationists. How did the medical and dental community react to U.S. regulators’ total 180 over water fluoridation, going from presumptively safe to presumptively dangerous? We can get the best of both worlds with topical application of fluoride, so I continue to advocate for the use of fluoride toothpaste, but pregnant and breastfeeding women may want to consider non-fluoridated water sources to reduce the apparent risk to the developing brain. This is the final video in my series on water fluoridation. If you missed any of the others, see: • Why Is There Fluoride in Water? Is It Effective? (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-is-there-fluoride-in-water-is-it-effective) • Side Effects of Water Fluoridation: Dental Fluorosis (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/side-effects-of-water-fluoridation-dental-fluorosis) • Is Water Fluoridation Safe? (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/is-water-fluoridation-safe) • Why I Changed My Mind on Water Fluoridation (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-i-changed-my-mind-on-water-fluoridation) You can also watch the recording of the webinar that I did on this topic, which includes a Q&A at the end: https://nutritionfacts.org/webinar/why-i-changed-my-mind-on-water-fluoridation/ I mentioned the example of lead exposure. If you want to know more, I have an entire series on that topic, starting with How the Lead Paint Industry Got Away with It (https://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-the-lead-paint-industry-got-away-with-it/).
