Saffron has been studied in women with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). In two studies with a total of about 125 women, 20-30 mg of saffron daily was shown to notably reduce symptoms of PMS compared to placebo. This includes depression and mood symptoms. More research is needed to repeat these findings, and it remains promising but speculative.
Saffron acts as an analgesic and antispasmodic agent and is used to stimulate menstruation or release blood flow. Another very important effect of saffron is that can assist against spasms and relieve pain and irritability which are common side effects during periods.
Saffron is excellent at reducing PMS symptoms including period pain and cramps. Active compounds in saffron has been found to help increase serotonin, which significantly decrease before period comes. Saffron also helps work against spasms and ease blood flow.
