IS TURMERIC MILK GOOD FOR PREGNANT WOMEN? A REVIEW BY NUTRITION PROFESSIONALS

Expert opinion from Rukevwe Natufe

Turmeric is safe for consumption in pregnancy in small amounts. Pregnant women must avoid taking supplements or medicinal quantities of this spice. This includes capsules or supplements containing turmeric or curcumin, that is its key active ingredient. Taking large amounts of curcumin in the course of pregnancy could alter estrogen levels in the body, that can cause uterine contradictions or bleeding. These effects may be enough to cause pregnancy loss or early labour.

Turmeric is an ayurvedic root herb that has been traditionally consumed safely to treat inflammatory conditions. There are limited studies that address the safety of consuming turmeric while pregnant. It is however suggested that during pregnancy the individual consults their physician prior to consumption.

There is not enough scientific evidence to support either the safety or health benefits of turmeric milk consumption during pregnancy. Turmeric when being consumed in typical amounts found in foods and drinks may provide several anti-inflammatory benefits to pregnant women.
