Lupus is an autoimmune disease in which the body produces autoantibodies and immune reactions that are responsible for attacking its own tissues. It is a disease that develops more commonly in young women and in Afro-descendants. It usually affects multiple systems and has a large and variable spectrum of presentation that may be different for each patient. In patients known to have Lupus, it is known that psychological or physical stress, such as infections, pregnancy, trauma/accidents, exposure to ultraviolet light, some medications, among others, can act as triggers that trigger disease crises/activity, episodes also known as flare.
Lupus flare refers to the significant increase in diseases activity in one or more organ systems resulting in severe clinical symptoms. Flares usually come and go. It might so happen that the patient could experience pain in the first week with intense itchy rashes and experience no symptoms in the next week.
